Bella

Someone snatched me from Malac’s arms. Willow shrieked and scrambled up onto my shoulder to hide beneath my hair.

My heart on fire, I struggled, shrieking.

In the dark, I couldn’t see a damn thing, but who or whatever held me had two scaled arms that bit into my chest and belly.

I jerked backward to head butt them, but they reeled to the side. Scrambling, I kicked and clawed at the arms around my waist. Sweat burst from my forehead and coiled down my face.

A deep voice snarled in my ear. “Hold still or I will drop you.”

I shuddered. I didn’t recognize his voice. Could this be the same person who threw me off the balcony?

Malac’s fire blasted around us. In the fading light, I watched him dive onto the guy’s back.

The three of us tumbled, falling back toward the cave we came from.

“Let me go,” I shouted, bucking and head butting the person. Fear grabbed hold of me and shook me.

Willow flung herself off my shoulder and onto the guy’s face. He bellowed and released me, scrambling to cover his face.

I fell away from him, tumbling down in an out-of-control spiral. My teeth chattered, and my hands shook, but I couldn’t reach the wall. Willow shrieked and dove off the guy, landing on my shoulder. She clung to me as if I could save her, but I couldn’t even save myself.

Panic rippled through me as I dropped through the darkness. Above, the two males grappled, though I could only hear their battle in grunts and bellows.

Fire lit up the passage enough for me to see Malac smack the other guy with his tail. The attacker was flung back and hit the wall. He sprung away from Malac, fleeing.

With a roar of rage, Malac dove down and plucked me from the air. While my heart banged a furious rhythm in my chest, he swooped away from where the other guy grabbed me.

“Did he hurt you?” he asked in a croaky voice. He held me with one arm while the hand on his other hand ran across my body.

“No. It was so sudden. I was with you, then he had me. Willow jumped onto his face and he let go.”

“Did you see him?”

“Not well enough to identify him. You?”

“He covered his face. I did not see enough of his scaling to recognize who he could be.” He growled.

I frowned, trying to recall if there was anything distinguishing him from other Driegons I’d met but couldn’t think of anything. It happened too fast. “Where did he go?”

“There are many passages within this cave system. I have not explored them all.”

“In other words, he could be anywhere by now.”

“Unfortunately, yes. I will leave you with my guard and go after him.”

“No way. You’re staying with me and the guard. This could be another attempt on your life and going after him alone will give him the advantage.”

“I will take one of my guard with me, then,” he growled. “I cannot let this go unchallenged.”

“Don’t treat a dishonorable person with honor.
